THE OASIS
The project was developed as part of the design studio Hochbau 2 during the Winter Semester 2023. The task was to design a community center located along the Vienna Gürtel, between Margaretengürtel and Matzleinsdorferplatz. Under the slogan “Ringstraße for the Proletariat,” the project proposes a pioneering building that contributes to the urban repair of the Gürtel. Near Herwegh Park, several heavily trafficked roads intersect, creating significant urban barriers and a challenging spatial situation.
The project’s approach was to work with the existing structures, connect them, and establish a social forum as an important place for recreation, communication, and education. The steel lattice shell responds to the industrial character of the surroundings while simultaneously providing protection from noise and fine particulate pollution. Interior greenery on the third floor improves air quality and contributes to a comfortable indoor climate.
